Increase Your Shopify Conversion Rates with This Simple “Hack”

Recently, I’ve been working on a project together based on the Shopify e-commerce platform called Bangor Clothing Company Canada. It’s a women’s clothing company, so needless to say, scaling it and increasing our Shopify conversion rates has proved to be difficult – it’s a crowded market, there’s a ton of competition, and don’t even get me started on what the prices to bid on some of these keywords are like!

Luckily, Shopify – like WordPress, Magento, or any of the other big platforms out there – has a huge support base, and I came across this simple “hack” that really improves the appearance of the Shopify checkout screen, which if you didn’t know, is usually very limited in terms of customization. I found this tip on ConversionPirate.com and I don’t take for credit for it, but I do think it’s valuable enough to share with you all!

Applying the “Hack”

Sign in to your Shopify back end and navigate to the “Online Store” sales channel (usually it’s the second to last link at the bottom of the page), then click on “Prefernces”
If you haven’t already, ensure your Title and Meta description are filled out – this is incredibly important for any site, let alone an e-commerce store!
Scroll down to the “Google Analytics” section of the page – again, make sure your Google Analytics account is connected to your store, this is crucial to optimizing and maintaining any website
In the “Additional Google Analytics JavaScript” box, copy and paste in the script on this page (see below) – make any text changes you’d like, then hit “Save”
That’s it!

What Does it Do?

This simple change is actually pretty feature-rich, and it modifies and adds a number of key elements to the cart page.

First, it adds urgency – it adds a countdown timer to the top of the checkout, which would make a customer feel as if they might miss a great deal, thus increasing the likelihood of conversion.

Second, it builds trust – there’s a lot of phishy e-commerce sites out there, and even though yours isn’t one of them, how is a customer supposed to know? Trust symbols – including security symbols, icons of familiar payment gateways (like VISA, MasterCard, PayPal, etc), and information about your company and why to shop with you, all work together to build trust in a customers mind. This change adds secured payment gateway information to the bottom of the cart, and information about your company and why it can be trusted to the sidebar.
